A Mixed Bag of Statistics

https://flhsmv.gov/pdf/crashreports/crash_facts_2017.pdf Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles keeps statistics on crashes, ages of those involved, confounding factors, fatalities, injuries, etc. If you have some time to kill (no pun intended), it's actually an interesting read. And a strange mix of trends. For some good news, fatalities of drivers from drinking has taken a precipitous drop from 2016 to 2017, a whopping -18.87% across the state, and a staggering -33.3% in Orange County, though the figures are in the double digits, so even slight reductions amount to larger percentages. But it's a very encouraging trend. The bad news on impairment? Well, drug related fatalities are up both in Florida and in Orange County. The report states that there has been a 33.3% increase in those in Orange County, and healthy increase for the state. One Rule to...er...Rule Them All

The Golden Rule: 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' This rule is for two kinds of people, who are often one and the same. One is a fool, and the other a well intentioned person who seeks to do right by the world. It is the greatest source of hypocrisy in our society. We teach this rule to children with little more thought than to try to avert childhood strife. We know that in childhood, we are closer to equal with our peers than at any other time in our lives. After childhood, we only embrace this rule in the most rudimentary way, and never in our efforts to advance our position. Do you think that a leader or a successful man subscribes to this rule? Consider this, the next time that you have a request for your boss, and he tells you no, do you think he would appreciate being told in kind no to a request of his or hers? Of course not. Done! (With Stage 1)

It's been a slog, but I've finally captured every road's center line in Orlando within the 5 mile radius of Lake Eola! With this information, I'll now be able to measure the 5 sections of each road, average them out, and get a total paved area for the residential and local streets. If you only consider the red and orange lines, which have been previously quantified, it only comes out to 194 miles of total length. But you can see all of the bright green between these highways and arterials, I'd be willing to bet we're looking at well over 1000 miles total! From this image, you can see that the grids are far more dense and complete on the East side of the city. The west is a little less developed, and has more industrial uses, especially up in the North West quadrant.
